Watch Avenged Sevenfold break down breakthrough single, “Bat Country”

Credit: Jeff ForneyAvenged Sevenfold‘s ongoing Breakdown series, during which members of the band dive deep into the recording of specific songs throughout their career, has finally reached the Southern California metallers’ breakthrough hit: “Bat Country.”

In the 10-minute video, the first of a two-parter, frontman M. Shadows and bassist Johnny Christ describe how A7X’s performance of the City of Evil single on TRL changed the trajectory of their career.

“Our good friends in Good Charlotte…took us on TRL and we played ‘Bat Country,'” Shadows remembers. “Between this song and the music video, it was the thing that catapulted us to the mainstream.”

“Every person that was listening to Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys was now subjected to ‘Bat Country,'” he adds.

True to the title of the series, Shadows and Christ break down every minute of the song, including an extended look into the vocalist’s “He who makes a beast out of himself…” intro, which results in a lot of laughs.

Previous Breakdown episodes have explored the songs “Nightmare,” “The Stage,” “Beast and the Harlot” and “Almost Easy.”
