Metallica pays tribute to Thin Lizzy’s Phil Lynott in Ireland with “Whiskey in the Jar” performance

ABC/Randy HolmesMetallica‘s European tour continued over the weekend with a show at the Slane Castle in Ireland. While they were there, the metal legends paid tribute to late Thin Lizzy frontman and iconic Irish musician Phil Lynott.

During the show, Metallica performed their version of the Irish traditional “Whiskey in the Jar,” which Thin Lizzy had recorded in 1972. At the end of the song, frontman James Hetfield declared, “We love you, Phil!”

Official footage of the performance is streaming now on YouTube.

Hetfield also posted a photo of him standing next to Lynott’s Dublin statue in an Instagram post, his first in over a year.

“Much respect and love to my favorite songwriter, Mr. Phil Lynott,” he wrote in the caption.

Metallica’s European tour continues Tuesday in Amsterdam. They’ll be back in the U.S. this September to play two orchestra-accompanied shows in San Francisco to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their 1999 live album S&M.
