Credit: Sebastian SmithScott Stapp has released a new song called “Gone Too Soon,” a track off his upcoming solo album, The Space Between the Shadows.
Speaking to Billboard, which premiered the emotional tune, the ex-Creed frontman reveals that “Gone Too Soon” was partly inspired by the deaths of Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington, who died within two months of each other in 2017.
“Somewhere around the time Chester passed, and we had already been reeling from Cornell’s passing, I was flipping through the news and saw the suicide rate for [U.S. military] vets was skyrocketing,” Stapp explains.
“And all these people are OD-ing from heroin, drug addictions, opioids. The school shootings,” he continues.
“It was just a collection of things that all hit me at once. So [‘Gone Too Soon’] was inspired by a series of events that just came together to impact me as a human being, all at once, and then that song came to life.”
The Space Between the Shadows, which also features the single “Purpose for Pain,” arrives July 19. It’s Stapp’s third solo effort, and first since 2013’s Proof of Life.
Stapp is currently touring the U.S. in support of The Space Between the Shadows. The run continues Friday in Houston, Texas.
