Beastie Boys create new signature skateboarding shoe with Adidas

ABC/Randy HolmesBeastie Boys have teamed up Adidas to create a signature skateboarding shoe to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the band’s 1989 sophomore album, Paul’s Boutique.

“Few artists showcase the confluence of so many different elements of ’80s and ’90s subculture better than Beastie Boys,” Adidas Skateboarding’s Cullen Poythress tells Fast Company. “They represent skateboarding. They represent graffiti. They represent hardcore punk. They represent hip-hop. And they represent street fashion and style.”

The sneaker was co-designed by Beastie members Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz and Michael “Mike D” Diamond.

“We just started talking with a couple of their design guys about different ideas for what we could do to the sneaker,” Horovitz says. “Mike and I were talking about the stripes, and what if they were cut out and you could see through the shoe.”

“Then we thought it’d be cool if it was like a sweatshirt on the inside, like a sweatshirt for your feet, and you could see the inside from the outside,” Ad-Rock adds. “That’s our twist.”

The sneaker will be available at select North American skateboard shops, and at the New York City Beyond the Streets art gallery, beginning this Thursday, July 25.
