Master of Pumas: Woman escapes encounter with cougar by playing Metallica song

ABC/Randy HolmesA Metallica song helped a Canadian woman escape a potential dangerous encounter with a cougar.

According to KelownaNow, Dee Gallant was walking her dog in British Columbia’s Cowichan Valley when she spotted the big cat walking towards her. After yelling and making loud noises, as recommended by wildlife experts, the cougar still didn’t move away, so Gallant turned to the power of heavy metal and starting playing Metallica’s “Don’t Tread on Me” on her phone.

“I thought it was the noisiest thing on my phone that would probably scare it, [but] that was also the message I wanted to convey to the cougar,” Gallant explains. “As soon as the first notes blared out, it ran into the bush.”

Gallant and her husky then safely made their way home, and now she feels she owes Metallica a favor.

“I would love to contact them someday and tell James Hetfield that he saved my life,” she says.
