Rapper Ty Dolla $ign recreates 2001 Kurt Cobain “SPIN” cover

Courtesy of SPINRapper Ty Dolla $ign is paying tribute to Kurt Cobain by recreating the late Nirvana frontman's posthumous October 2001 SPIN cover photo.

The cover of the publication's digital August issue features a black-and-white photo of Ty wearing a similar sweater to the one Cobain wore on the 2001 magazine; he's hunched over in a similar position.

"I got Kurt tatted on the back of my leg!" Ty says of his love for Cobain. "The first time I ever actually loved a rock song was 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' and then it made me go and listen to all of his s***. I wish he would have lived longer to really get off everything, and I wonder what he would sound like right now."

"It's an honor to be on the SPIN cover like all these legends," he adds. "I definitely wanted to pay homage to Kurt because he's the rock star of rock stars. I'm just a sex symbol -- I'm trying to get there."

You can read Ty's cover story now via Spin.com.

The 2001 SPIN issue marked the 10-year anniversary of Nirvana's legendary 1991 album Nevermind.

Kurt Cobain and Nirvana have been popping up in the hip-hop world often lately. For example, a recent edition of Kanye West's Sunday Service concerts featured gospel versions of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Come As You Are," while Cobain is a credited writer on the Lil Nas X song "Panini," because it interpolates the vocal melody from "In Bloom."
