Skillet promises “theater” and new songs on “Victorious” headlining tour

Credit: Chrissy NixSkillet‘s road schedule kicks into high gear this weekend, as the rockers launch a U.S. tour in support of their new album, Victorious. Speaking to ABC Radio, frontman John Cooper says he hopes the band will be playing “lots” of songs from the new record.

“You never know if a record’s gonna go any good or not,” Cooper confesses.

“If people hate the record, I guess we’ll only play two or three new songs,” he laughs. “If people like it a lot, we’ll probably play five. But it’s so fun to play new music.”

So far, so good, as lead single “Legendary” currently sits in the top 20 on Billboard‘s Mainstream Rock Songs chart. “Legendary” joins the ranks of fellow epic, arena-ready singles “Monster” and “Feel Invincible,” and Cooper feels that, overall, Skillet is a very theatrical live band.

“One of our friends came to see us, he’s a fellow musician, a Grammy Award-winning musician,” Cooper recalls. “And he’s, like, ‘I was watching your show, and I was thinking, ‘Man, every one of them on stage has their own personality, each person on stage is their own little concert.'”

“I think that’s part of the theater of what Skillet is,” he adds.

The tour’s bill will also include fellow rock radio staples and friends-of-Skillet Sevendust, with whom they’ve toured once before.

“They’re a band’s band,” Cooper says of the Atlanta metallers. “All the bands rush out to see Sevendust, and it’s gonna be a really great tour that we’re doing.”

Skillet’s tour with Sevendust launches Sunday, August 11 in Memphis, Tennessee.
