Chino Moreno teams up with Death Valley High for Christian Death cover

ABC/Randy HolmesChino Moreno is lending his vocals to a new take on a classic goth song.

The Deftones frontman is featured on a cover of the Christian Death track “Cavity — First Communion,” recorded by the self-described “death disco” band Death Valley High. You can listen to the song now via RevolverMag.com.

Death Valley High vocalist Reyka Osburn previously worked with Moreno on the Deftones song “Lucky You,” and the band opened for Moreno’s project Crosses back in 2014. After one show, both groups were hanging backstage and listening to the 1982 Christian Death album, Only Theater of Pain.

“By the end of ‘Cavity — First Communion,’ [Moreno] says, ‘We gotta play this song before the end of the tour!'” Osburn tells Revolver.

“‘DONE,’ I firmly agree and added, ‘We should RECORD it!’ He looked at me with eyes ablaze and exclaimed, ‘We can do ANYTHING!'”

While the collaboration didn’t end up happening on the tour, five years later, Death Valley High and Moreno, and were finally able to put it together.

Osburn notes, “We can now comfortably say that we’ve done our honest best contributing to the original, not just [that we’ve] done a cover for the sake of doing one.”

The cover will be included on Death Valley High’s upcoming EP Duel, which arrives this Friday, August 23.
