Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus unearths “moody” cover of “Just What I Needed” following Ric Ocasek’s passing

Walt Disney Television/Paula LoboBlink-182‘s Mark Hoppus has unearthed a cover he did of The Cars‘ “Just What I Needed” following the news of Ric Ocasek‘s death.

The cover, which is streaming now via Hoppus’ Soundcloud, was originally recorded a few years ago for a TV show.

“They wanted moody and strange, dark, and drony, with space for dialogue to go over it,” Hoppus recalls.

However, the show was very quickly canceled, and the episode with Hoppus’ recording never aired.

“It’s been sitting on a hard drive ever since, and with the sad news of Ric Ocasek’s passing, I thought I’d put it up here,” Hoppus says. “Enjoy it. And go listen to The Cars.”

It’s worth noting that Ocasek didn’t actually sing lead on “Just What I Needed” — late Cars bass player Benjamin Orr did — but Ocasek wrote the song.

Ocasek died Sunday at age 75 of natural causes.
