Weezer returns to “heavy metal roots” with new single, “The End of the Game”

ABC/Randy HolmesThe guitars are in full force on Weezer‘s new single “The End of the Game,” and as frontman Rivers Cuomo tells ABC Audio, that’s no accident.

“‘End of the Game’ is a really fun single for us, because we’re going back to our heavy metal roots and pulling out a lot of the flash guitar techniques,” Cuomo explains.

As for how that kind of song fits into the music landscape heading into 2020, Cuomo says that he and his band mates “hope people can relate to it now.”  But even if they don’t, Cuomo says Weezer is “having fun” with the song.

“The End of the Game” is the lead single from Weezer’s upcoming album, Van Weezer, which is due out May 2020. As you can probably guess from the title, the guitar-heavy direction in “The End of the Game” will continue throughout Van Weezer.

“It’s all gonna be classic Weezer mixed with heavy metal,” Cuomo says.

Weezer will be supporting Van Weezer on next summer’s Hella Mega tour with Green Day and Fall Out Boy.
