Cage the Elephant to perform at Daniel Johnston tribute concert

ABC/Randy HolmesCage the Elephant is performing at a tribute concert held in honor of the late cult singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston.

The event is dubbed Hi How Are You Day 2020, named after Johnston’s 1983 cassette. It takes place in Johnston’s hometown of Austin, Texas on January 22, which would’ve been his 59th birthday.

Johnston died in September at age 58. He achieved cult status for his lo-fi recordings, and he gained mainstream attention in the ’90s after Kurt Cobain started wearing a t-shirt featuring the cover of Hi, How Are You.

Throughout his life, Johnston battled mental health issues, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. His music and his health were the subjects of a 2005 documentary, The Devil and Daniel Johnston.
