Slipknot guitarist says hearing Ariana Grande for the first time blew his mind

Even metal gods like to change things up when it comes to listening to music in their spare time.  Take Slipknot guitarist Jim Root, for example.

In an interview with the Irish website Joe, Root discusses his love of classic rock, saying he couldn’t believe it when, on separate occasions, he met Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who and Sting, and all three musicians had not only heard of Slipknot, but complimented their music.

Root also says he loves ’90s Britpop and ’80s music like Duran Duran, but the most surprising revelation he makes is about today’s pop music.

“One of the girls at our management company was listening to some Ariana Grande, and I didn’t know that that’s what she was listening to,” he says. “I was like, ‘What is that? That’s awesome! That’s got, like, a vibe to it, you know?’”

“She told me what it was, and I was kind of mind-blown,” he adds. “So I’m sure there’s a lot of really good modern pop music out there — I’ll discover it when it’s time.”

No word on whether or not Root has added Ariana’s thank u, next to his playlist as the Knot continue on their current overseas tour, which stops in Birmingham, England tonight.   The European leg starts January 28, and the masked metallers move on to Asia in March.
