The Metallica frontman made a surprise appearance at a tribute concert to the late Eddie Money Thursday night in Beverly Hills, California. His performance marked the first time he’s played live since returning to rehab last fall to treat his ongoing battle with substance abuse.

During the show, Hetfield performed an acoustic cover of Money’s “Baby Hold On,” turning the 1978 hit into a slower, more sinister-sounding dirge. He also shared a story of the first time he met Money.

You can watch fan-shot footage of the performance now on YouTube.

Metallica announced last September that Hetfield had re-entered rehab, and that the band’s upcoming Australia tour would be postponed. Hetfield’s first official show back with Metallica takes place April 15 in Chile.
