“This is my microphone”: Evanescence’s Amy Lee finds newfound political voice surfacing in her music

Credit: P.R. BrownEarlier this year, Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee shared a post speaking publicly about her political views for the first time. Speaking with ABC Audio, Lee revealed that her newfound political voice is surfacing in her music, as well.

“I’m trying my best to do something that I’ve always strived to do, but I’m trying to dig in harder to really just say what I mean, to try to be as honest as I can,” Lee said.

She added, “I find that the more I share from my heart that really, really means something real to me, the more I love the songs and the more proud of the work that I’ve done.

Lee shared her post in February amid the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump. “Anyone who refuses to hear witnesses speak is clearly not seeking truth,” she wrote. “Accepting this abuse says it’s OK for our leaders to lie to us, cheat to us, make decisions without our input, and silence us when we try to speak up.”

“I think that we have to stand up for what we believe in, and this is my microphone,” Lee told ABC Audio. “So if there’s something to be said, then I’m not just gonna sit around not saying it.”

Lee spoke with ABC Audio before the death of George Floyd and the subsequent protests. Last Friday, she shared a statement criticizing Trump for his “threatening, racist tweet,” presumably referring to the one that was flagged by Twitter for “glorifying violence.”

“I am angry, horrified, ashamed and have been trying to put my thoughts into words all day,” Lee wrote. “Evil abuses of power and murder in the streets.”
