The much-maligned 2011 release was recorded in collaboration with the late Lou Reed, a combination that fans and critics alike agreed did not live up to either act’s legendary status, to say the least. However, Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta feels Lulu deserves another go with new singers.
In a tweet Tuesday, Jasta wrote that he’d donate $50,000 to Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation if he, along with fellow vocalists including Dee Snider and Sebastian Bach, could “write [their] own vocals over Lulu‘s instrumentals.”
“Couldn’t hurt!” Jasta wrote. “No diss to Lou Reed I’m just brainstorming recording ideas while we’re aren’t touring.”
In subsequent tweets, Jasta suggested other singers such as Slipknot‘s Corey Taylor, Sevendust‘s Lajon Witherspoon and Volbeat‘s Michael Poulsen could take part.
“Please note I’m down for Lou Reed’s lyrics,” Jasta added. “Respect to LR. We could reimagine phrasing/melody/arrangement of his lyrics. What metal singer wouldn’t want to sing over Metallica riffs?!”
If a re-recorded version of Lulu did happen, it would hard for it to receive a worse reception than the original did. In his review, critic Chuck Klosterman wrote, “If the Red Hot Chili Peppers acoustically covered the 12 worst Primus songs for Starbucks, it would still be (slightly) better than [Lulu].”
