Avenged Sevenfold guests in video for new NOFX song, “Linewleum”

Fat Wreck ChordsAvenged Sevenfold guests in the video for a new NOFX song, “Linewleum.”

The track is a reworked version of the NOFX track “Linoleum,” which, despite never being a single or getting a video or any radio airplay, has become one of the punk mainstays’ most beloved and oft-covered songs. The new recording keeps the same melody as the original, but replaces the lyrics with self-aware lines such as “It’s like bulldozing a bowling alley for a used record store/Decomposing your best song is sacrilege.”

The accompanying video, which is streaming now on YouTube, begins with Avenged Sevenfold about to dive into their own take on “Linoleum” before cutting to live footage of countless other bands covering the track.

In a statement, NOFX’s Fat Mike says he came with the idea for “Linewleum” while staying up until 4 a.m. watching covers of the original “Linoleum” on YouTube.

“I decided to write a song that was a shout-out to all those people that learned those four chords and remembered the non-rhyming lyrics,” Mike explains. “Then I asked the biggest of all the bands (Avenged Sevenfold) to play some leads on the song. Then M. Shadows suggested we do a video together. Then I figured I should put all of the bands in the video. Well, I couldn’t fit all the bands, but I picked a bunch of cool ones!”

“A song about not playing a song that’s not a hit song with a video about other bands covering the song!” he adds. “This is why I love punk rock and writing punk songs. Rules out the door!”

“Linewleum” will appear on the upcoming NOFX record Single Album, due out February 26.
