Because of the times: Kings of Leon’s new album ‘When You See Yourself’ to be released as NFT

Rolling Stone reports that KoL’s upcoming album, When You See Yourself, is set to be the first record to ever be released as a non-fungible token, or NFT.

An NFT gives buyers the chance to own a wholly unique piece of digital media — and that’s where the “non-fungible” part comes in. “Fungible” means “interchangeable,” but with NFTs, each token is different from the other, unlike other cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin.

When You See Yourself will be available as three different types of tokens. The most basic one costs $50, and includes “enhanced media,” which Rolling Stone describes as “kind of like an alternate, moving album cover.” Also available will be tokens accompanied by individual audiovisual art pieces, which cost between $95 to $2,500.

Finally, there’s the “golden ticket” option, which gives the buyer lifetime access to four front-row seats at a Kings of Leon show for each tour, as well as a complete VIP experience — including a personal driver to the concert and a meet-and-greet with the band. According to Rolling Stone, this marks the first time a concert ticket will be sold as an NFT, as well.

The “golden ticket” tokens will be sold through an auction which opens up this Friday, March 5, at noon ET via the site YellowHeart.io. All of the other options will go on sale at that time, as well.

If all this makes your head hurt, you can still buy and stream a regular old version of When You See Yourself when it drops on Friday. The record, the follow-up to 2016’s WALLS, includes the lead single “The Bandit.”
