Maynard James Keenan guests on an upcoming episode of former Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar‘s Rock & Roll Road Trip TV series. In an advance clip from the episode, the Tool and A Perfect Circle frontman describes how running cross-country in high school influenced his unique singing and songwriting style.
Speaking to Hagar, Keenan explains that, while he was running, he never had a traditional “in-out” breathing rhythm.
“I actually had odd rhythms…I was actually running to the steps,” Keenan says. “So, if you’re going over hills, or down hills, or in chuck-holes…my breath would follow those rhythms.”
He adds that, while running, he’d also listen to bands like Pink Floyd and King Crimson, as well as AC/DC and Joni Mitchell, which he feels all helped him become the musician he is now.
Keenan’s full Rock & Roll Road Trip episode, which will also feature celebrity chef Guy Fieri, airs this Sunday, July 7 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on AXS TV.
