Nickelback’s working on new music “a little,” says bassist: “I’ve heard a few things that I’m pretty intrigued by”

Credit: Richard Beland When Nickelback first teased they were releasing something new in August, fans speculated that the Canadian rockers were gearing up to announce a new album. That something new ended up being a cover of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” by The Charlie Daniels Band, but, according to bassist Mike Kroeger, new Nickelback material is in the works.

“Yes, we are working on new material a little,” Kroeger tells ABC Audio.

“I wouldn’t say in earnest, I would say it’s, like, COVID earnest,” he laughs. “[We’re] not really driving super hard because it just seems like there’s no end in sight and every day is exactly the same.”

With approaching the fresh material, Kroeger explains that he and his band mates are focusing on making sure the music comes “in a relaxed and natural, organic way, versus a hard deadline, push way.”

“Typically, that’s how we’ve done it, so maybe we should stick with that,” he says. “Right now it’s just when it happens, when it feels natural, let it come out.”

While the new stuff may be in the early stages, Kroeger reveals it’s caught his ear.

“I’ve heard a few things that I’ve been pretty intrigued by,” he says.

Nickelback’s most recent album is 2017’s Feed the Machine.
