ABC/Randy HolmesIn addition to his many musical endeavors, Maynard James Keenan is an avid wine enthusiast, and even owns his own winery. So avid, in fact, that he didn’t let the recording of Tool‘s long-awaited new album Fear Inoculum get in the way of his wine duties.
Speaking to Australia’s Tone Deaf, Keenan reveals that he recorded his vocals at his home studio in Arizona so that he could continue to work on his wine.
“It was during [wine] harvest,” Keenan says of the recording sessions. “I would spend time on the forklift, do some inoculating, do some wild ferments, whatever we were doing in the cellar while [producer Joe Barresi and engineer Matt Mitchell] gathered things together.”
In between, Keenan would take an hour or two to record, and then it was back to the wine.
“[We’d] listen back and go, ‘I can beat that, let’s beat that,'” Keenan explains. “Meanwhile I’m in the cellar working on the wines. That’s just logistically what it had to be. I didn’t have the luxury of time. So I made time.”
Fear Inoculum will finally arrive August 30, 13 years after 2006’s 10,000 Days.
